From Badminton Waste to Unique Sustainable Materials: The Story of Compo’Plume

After ten years of technical and commercial experience in composite materials, Benjamin Moreau decided to be inspired by his passion for badminton. He first notes that the steering wheels are manufactured on the other side of the planet and have a very limited lifespan. “So much so that some players would use around 50 in matches at the Olympics,” he says.

Benjamin continues to inquire and discovers that, each year in France, Badminton generates around 40 tonnes of waste. Based on this waste, he developed a first material, then decided to create Compo’Plume. The mission of this company is to turn atypical waste into new technical and sustainable materials.

“We collect badminton shuttlecocks intended to be thrown away from involved clubs throughout France. They order a Compo’Plume collection box on our website and return it to us once full. A single collection box can contain up to 700 badminton shuttlecocks,” adds the founder.

The collection boxes then arrive in an ESAT, an establishment which employs people with disabilities. Once the flywheels are crushed, they are sent to the workshop. They are then mixed in an artisanal way with other components to make the unique Compo’Plume material.
