From Archery Enthusiast to International Competitor: The Inspiring Journey of a Córdoba Athlete

Born in San Luis, she has lived in the City of Córdoba for 35 years and began practicing the discipline in 1993 in the archery department at the National University of Córdoba.

He began competing in local and some national tournaments until he made the decision to suspend the practice after two years to dedicate himself to work and raising his family: “In 2012 I resumed this sport in AFAPIECO (Piedmontese Family Association of Córdoba). All that period he was shooting with an Olympic recurve bow. I started practicing this current division with a Barebow or naked bow in 2020.” The AFAPIECO Club operates in the Quebrada de las Rosas in the City of Córdoba.

The 53-year-old athlete trains 4/5 days a week, shooting 200 arrows per day, and for the South American tournament the preparation was a lot of effort with the clear objective of prioritizing her job and family: “I started shooting with a plan drawn up, taking care of emotions and working on concentration,” he told us.

In the discipline of Barebowalso known in the country as ‘Sharp Arch’, it does not allow accessories to help aim and each style of bow has its perfect design for each taste. This type of bow was included in the international outdoor competition circuit starting in 2022 at the Pan American Games in Chile: “It is shot at a parapet on a 1.22m target 50 meters away.”

Among the achievements she has achieved in her career are several medals in the 2022 National Circuit, standing on the podium, qualifying to be part of the Argentine team which is made up of seven other shooters from all over the country.

In addition, she won the bronze medal in the National Final of Bahía Blanca in 2022. Also in 2023 she competed in several tournaments of the National Circuit, achieving the podium on different occasions, finishing as champion in the last National Final of Paraná, Entre Ríos: “There I felt that I was prepared to face international competition like it was in Brazil,” where she won the most desired medal.

Thinking about the future, the Graduate in Kinesiology and Physiotherapy tells us what her aspirations are: “To be able to continue polishing details and grow in score. Participating in other international tournaments, and since it is practiced without age limits, I aspire to continue feeling those unique sensations when shooting arrows for many more years. It is an individual sport where the mental is very important. For Córdoba, we would like the institutions to accompany us, get sponsors and for more young people to join this sport.”

Next, Ríos will travel to Medellín to participate in the Pan American Archery Championship between Monday, April 8 and Friday, April 12, where he will compete against local rivals and some arrivals from Brazil and the United States.
