French Players Shine in Estoril: Arthur Fils and Gaël Monfils Advance to Next Round

It’s a victory that will do good for Arthur Fils. Exited in the first round of the Masters 1000 in Miami, the Frenchman perfectly managed his entry into the competition at Estoril this Wednesday by winning in two sets against Joao Sousa (7-5, 6-4). If everything was not perfect, the 37th in the world provided the essentials against an opponent who played his last match in singles. In the next round, he has a meeting with Cristian Garín.

Alternating between the good and the less good, but without ever completely losing the thread of the match, Fils, seeded N.5 in the Portuguese tournament, was able to be decisive on the most important points, notably winning 3 break points out of 6 (compared to only 1 in 4 for his opponent). More efficient on serve (64% of first serves, 75% of points won behind his first serve), Fils won in 1 hour and 50 minutes against the 272nd player in the world, the highest ranked Portuguese player in history (N . 28 in 2016).

Monfils is also moving forward

After Arthur Fils, logically place at… Gaël Monfils. The latter won with difficulty 7-5, 7-5 over Henrique Rocha, 197th in the world and beneficiary of an invitation to the ATP 250 tournament in Estoril, Wednesday in Portugal. The young Portuguese (19 years old) did not stand out against the 37-year-old French veteran, seeded N.7 in this first ATP 250 tournament on earth this spring. He managed to pick up the score each time Monfils managed to take a few games in advance.

Rocha, in front of a supportive audience, saved a match point on his last serve, before finally losing with a double fault. Monfils, currently 45th in the world, knocked out a week ago by Carlos Alcaraz at the Masters 1000 in Miami, will face the Hungarian Marton Fucsovics (85th) in the next round.
