ST. PAUL, Minn. — Zeev Buium is aware he is projected to be selected among the top 10 at the 2024 NHL Draft on June 28, but the University of Denver defenseman doesn’t think it can top the high of winning the national championship with a 2-0 victory against No. 1 Boston College at Xcel Energy Center on Saturday.
“He doesn’t seem uncomfortable in our NCAA tournament matches. In my opinion, it would be challenging to find a more influential player who consistently performs at such a high level in both the draft and game.”
In the second period, Buium made a no-look drop pass to Rieger Lorenz of the Minnesota Wild, resulting in a score of 2-0. This put Buium at the top of the NCAA scoring leaderboard for defensemen with 50 points (11 goals, 39 assists) in 42 games.
Shai expressed their excitement for this moment and shared that they have dreamt of it since childhood. They have even celebrated in their backyard as if they had won a national championship before. They are incredibly happy to finally experience this moment.
David Carle, the coach of Denver, has high hopes for Zeev’s future in the NHL. Zeev, who stands 6 feet tall and weighs 183 pounds, will not turn 19 until December 7.
According to the midterm rankings from Central Scouting, Buium was placed at the fourth spot among North American skaters and fifth in NHL.com’s top 32.
Carle believes that the root of his success lies in his mindset. He is a highly competitive individual who thrives in important moments and aims to make an impact on the game. He has a unique skill of adapting to the game at hand, making him a valuable player. He can either help to create openings or shut down plays, making him an asset in both high-scoring and close games.
Lorenz, who was chosen by the Wild with the 56th pick in the 2022 NHL Draft, wasted no time in acknowledging Buium’s contribution.
Zeev expressed that his brother is the greatest and he loves and appreciates him greatly.
“The 18-year-old college student stated that this is undoubtedly at the top. They expressed feeling incredibly elated and described it as the best feeling in the world.”
“I was aware that he was heading towards the goal, so I just placed the puck in that direction and Rieger made a fantastic finish,” stated Buium, who received recognition as both an All-American and a member of the All-Tournament team. “I believe luck was on our side tonight, courtesy of the hockey gods.”
Saturday was even more unforgettable for Buium as he got to celebrate the national championship alongside his older brother, Shai Buium. Shai, a 20-year-old junior defenseman, was drafted 36th overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2021 NHL Draft. He had an impressive season with 36 points (7 goals, 29 assists) in 43 games for Denver.
Zeev has been consistently accomplishing this task throughout the entire year, stated Lorenz. He successfully ascended the ice and defeated a few of his opponents. I was fortunate enough to find some open space, and Zeev spotted me and passed me the puck. I was lucky enough to score the goal.
