French Football Coach Expresses Disappointment Over Pierre Lees-Melou Suspension Confirmation

“How do you judge the fact that the suspension of Pierre Lees-Melou (1 fixed match) has been confirmed?
It’s a big disappointment, I think they had the opportunity to repair an injustice that everyone saw. He suffered things more. We have a disciplinary committee which just ratified the referee’s report. Who considered that Pierre was the driving force behind the fact that there was a gathering. It’s a shame to have a disciplinary committee which can view the images but which still imposes sanctions. French football operates at two speeds. I find this quite surprising and very disappointing. It’s been three, four times in the season that we recognize that we have been penalized. Monaco (0-2, first leg) is the match where there were the most errors against us. I don’t forget Clermont (1-1).

But it’s good to admit your mistakes. Afterwards, you have no reason to blame them (the referees), we all make mistakes. When new technology doesn’t fix these mistakes, it’s a shame. On their feet, they are not capable of correcting mistakes. Let’s go back ten years, with referees taking responsibility. What we thought would be progress for referees changes nothing. And what’s more, the third level, the commission, doesn’t change anything either. Let’s stay like this. Everything is going well in French football.

“I know very well that for certain media and institutions, having Brest in the European Cup next season is not the sexiest thing. You shouldn’t expect anything from anyone.”

Brest is disturbing, as your sports director Grégory Lorenzi explained after the match in Lyon (3-4, last Sunday)?
I would never question the intellectual honesty of the referees. I don’t blame Mr. Vernice. When it comes to the players, on the pitch, there are lots of things that I don’t see, I imagine it’s the same for the referee. I don’t think about the conspiracy theory. The only thing is that I am aware that in the European Cup, it is better to have Lyon, Marseille, with a big stadium. I know very well that for certain media and institutions, having Brest in the European Cup next season is not the sexiest thing. You shouldn’t expect anything from anyone. This somewhat unfavorable context must serve to unite us so that we can achieve results to close a perhaps historic season. Let’s focus on what we can do.

How does the group experience it?
Wrong. It’s unfortunate to say but we have to turn the page. “Delete”! (smile) As on the computer, you have to “delete”. To erase. It passed, behind us.

You used to finish strong. In the last two matches (Metz, 4-3, and Lyon), that was not the case…
I don’t think we finished badly physically but in the management of the match. It can be emotional, lots of things. It is obvious that we missed our last two twenty minutes of the match, we discussed it together. We must not disperse. I talk about it with the players, they tell me that they feel good. This was our strength in the maintenance operation (last season), physically, until the last match, the team had a lot of freshness.

Did you have the ambition to finish as the best defense in the Championship?
The players set themselves to finish in the top three.

Monaco is a big piece…
Just look at their stats. They are a very strong team offensively. When you see the squad, it’s a little scary. It’s the best squad with PSG. There is so much choice and quality in the squad… It’s a great match to play. It’s going to be a big challenge for us.

“We were sold the fact of reducing Ligue 1 from 20 to 18, they took away a Cup (of the League). We’ve done all that and we’re still adjusting things (the schedule)”

What do you think of the arrangement of the calendar to favor the careers of French clubs in European Cups?
Just not fair, I don’t know. What I find strange is that it is only in France that we do this. From the moment you are qualified, you prepare for your season. We were sold on reducing Ligue 1 from 20 to 18, they took away a (League) Cup. We’ve done all that and we’re still adjusting things. I support French clubs in the European Cup. Afterwards, understanding it, no. That means we’re not capable. I don’t understand the fact that we are developing things. If it allows us to go further, so much the better. I say that not because I think it will put us at a disadvantage. I do not know. I think it’s a bit special. I imagine that the opponents of Lille, of PSG, that complicates their schedule… I don’t know if it’s an admission of weakness but it’s something that can be of concern.

Will you still be Brest coach next season?
No, no, I have already signed for a big English club (smile)! I wasn’t expecting this question. I’m unable to say what the future will be for me, but I’m in the building mindset, I’ve already planned next season’s pre-season, friendlies. For me, there is no debate today. »
