French Federation to Decide Between Tcheuméo and Malonga for Olympic -78 kg Spot

Tuesday morning, the selection committee of the French Federation (FFJDA) met to discuss the -78 kg, the last of the fourteen categories (seven women’s and seven men’s) not yet to have a designated holder for the Olympic Games in Paris this summer. Audrey Tcheuméo (33 years old) and Madeleine Malonga (30 years old) are competing for the only ticket to compete in the Champ de Mars Arena on August 1st.

A decision that should follow sporting logic

However, on Tuesday, the discussion was heated between the five decision-makers: Stéphane Nomis (president of the FFJDA), Frédérique Jossinet (vice-president in charge of high level and performance, president of the selection committee), Sébastien Mansois (DTN ), Bastien Puget (deputy DTN) and Christophe Massina (manager of the Bleues). With the Games organized in France, the choice takes on even more importance. Especially between two judokas with XXL achievements: Tcheuméo was world champion in 2011, silver medalist in 2023, double medalist at the Olympics (3rd in 2012, 2nd in 2016). Malonga was world champion in 2019 and silver medalist at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo.

Finally taken on Tuesday, the decision should follow the sporting logic of the weekend. The CNOSF must validate this choice during a session scheduled for April 12. But the FFJDA is negotiating for validation no later than Friday, aware that this race for selection, started at the 2022 Worlds, has lasted too long. If necessary, the Federation reserves the right to announce a preselection no later than Friday.
