Freiburg Begins Final Spurt for European Cup Qualification Against Darmstadt

With the game against bottom team Darmstadt, the final spurt begins for SC Freiburg in the fight for renewed qualification for the European Cup. The Freiburgers are also hoping for their recent away strength.

In the first leg against the Lilies, Freiburg had to be content with a 1-1 draw. After falling behind, Lucas Höler equalized the final score before the break. After an initially blocked corner, defenders Philipp Lienhart and Matthias Ginter, who had moved up at the standard, initiated the goal, which Höler scored with his knee. All three participants will be missing in the second leg in Darmstadt: Höler is suspended, Ginter had surgery on his Achilles tendon and will miss the rest of the season, while it is still unclear when Lienhart (knee problems) will be able to play again. Such personnel concerns have accompanied the sports club throughout the entire season. In the first leg against Darmstadt, three players from the U23 were on the bench.

The loss of regular central defenders Ginter and Lienhart may have contributed to Freiburg having the second-weakest defense of the second half of the season. With 26 goals conceded, they only conceded one less than Darmstadt. When it comes to the number of defeats in the second series, the sports club has six, only one less than its Hessian opponent.

Freiburg’s away strength

Things have been going well for Freiburg in foreign stadiums recently. They won their most recent two away games, first 2-1 in Bochum, then 3-0 in Gladbach. And so, after the 4-1 defeat in the home game against Leipzig, the players also referred to these successes when it came to the prospects for the final phase of the season. If they also win in Darmstadt, they would set a club record that was only set in the first three away games of the previous season: three away wins in a row.

At the moment, Freiburg are six points behind sixth-placed Frankfurt and are tied in ninth place with Augsburg and Hoffenheim, who have the better goal difference. Compared to its competitors, all of whom still have to play against Champions League aspirants, the sports club supposedly has the easiest remaining program in the fight for renewed participation in the European Cup. He only plays against teams that are currently in the bottom half of the table: the away game in Darmstadt is followed by two home games in a row against Mainz and Wolfsburg, then it goes to Cologne, and then the last two games with coach are against Heidenheim and at Union Berlin Christian Streich, who announced his departure at the end of the season.

Who will score the 700th competitive goal?

By then he – or his team – should break another mark: Freiburg’s next goal will be the 700th goal in competitive matches. If Vincenzo Grifo, who was the only one to score against Leipzig, succeeds on Sunday, it would be a first for the Italian. He has already scored against 15 of the 18 current Bundesliga clubs, only not against his own club Freiburg or against newly promoted teams Darmstadt and Heidenheim.

However, he hasn’t played against Heidenheim in the upper house yet, but he has already played against the Lilies twice. In total there have only been three duels between the two teams in the Bundesliga, but there have already been 26 in the 2nd Bundesliga. No other Bundesliga match this season has featured as often in the lower house as Freiburg against Darmstadt.
