France should not have an extra place in the Champions League next season

In the new C1 formula, two places are offered to the two countries having obtained the best results in the previous edition. With the eliminations of Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid, Spain can officially no longer claim it. La Liga caps at 15,312 points, its worst total since 2009 (13,312 points). It could even lose its second place in the UEFA index, calculated over 5 years. A first since 1998, the fault of Italy and its four clubs still in the running which should surpass it. By far the best performer this season (18,857 points), Serie A is almost guaranteed to obtain one of the two additional places. And therefore to send five clubs to the Champions League next season.

The Netherlands will remain threatening next season

This opportunity exists for France, but it is tiny. With 15,250 points, Ligue 1 remains far behind England (16,875) and Germany (17,642). If OM and LOSC, both on unfavorable waivers, did not qualify this Thursday evening, the Bundesliga would be almost uncatchable.

A final victory for PSG would not give France a fifth place either. The conquest of the C1 by a team already qualified via its championship opens a place for the club with the highest UEFA index among the winners of the championships ranked from 11th to 55th place. Currently, Ukrainian club Shakhtior Donetsk would qualify directly for the group stage. Looking ahead, French clubs will have to continue looking in the rearview mirror, with the Netherlands still threatening.

Next season, the 2019-2020 exercise, very successful for France, will no longer be taken into account. France had accumulated 11,666 points that season, compared to 9,400 for the Dutch. An advantage of more than two points which will disappear and reduce the gap with the 6th nation by half, bringing it to 2,265 points.
