Fortuna Düsseldorf defended third place in the 2nd Bundesliga with a dominant win against SV Wehen Wiesbaden. The SVWW weakened itself early on.

In the smooth 2-0 (1-0) win in Wiesbaden, Fortuna impressed with control and efficiency and will not be pushed out of third place even if HSV wins on Sunday. The Red and Whites, who have been unbeaten since the beginning of February, celebrated their fifth league victory in a row and are continuing on a wave of success and promotion.

For the SVWW, however, the situation in the bottom of the table is becoming increasingly precarious. If Braunschweig is successful on Sunday, Wiesbaden could slip to 15th place, just slightly ahead of the relegation places.

The requirement for both teams was: three points were needed. The Wiesbaden team lost their comfortable lead over the relegation zone for a long time and were only one point ahead of the relegation zone before the game. At the other end of the table, Fortuna was able to securely defend its promotion relegation place ahead of HSV with a three-pointer.

Düsseldorf shows its efficiency early on

As in previous games, the Rhinelanders started cautiously, but then showed early on why they are the second-best away team in the league. Matthias Zimmermann served Shinta Appelkamp on the right side of the penalty area. Appelkamp first let Franko Kovacevic out and then delicately finished from 14 meters into the left corner (13th minute). First shot on goal, first goal – a paragon of efficiency.

Red for Hyun-ju Lee weakens SVWW

Even after the opening goal, Fortuna acted in a measured manner. However, the Wiesbadeners were only able to do something with their freedom until the final third; F95 keeper Florian Kastenmeiner had a quiet afternoon during this phase. Wiesbaden’s Hyun-ju Lee also from the 35th minute. Then Düsseldorf midfielder Yannik Engelhardt stepped on his left calf with an open sole and was immediately shown red by referee Timo Gerach (35th). The sixth red card for SVWW this season, which leads the league standings.

Johannesson makes everything clear for Fortuna

Similar picture after the break: the SVWW moving forward and trying to turn the game around, Fortuna waiting and without much risk. Nevertheless, the ball fidgeted in the Wiesbaden net for the second time. Appelkamp played Isak Johannesson flat at the penalty spot and he pushed the ball into the left corner (64′). At this point, against ten Wiesbadeners, more than one preliminary decision.
