The U.S. Department of Justice announced on the 11th that Ippei Mizuhara (39), a former personal interpreter for Dodgers pitcher Shohei Ohtani (29) who was fired from the team due to illegal gambling and theft of large sums of money, was charged with bank fraud. . It is alleged that more than $16 million (approximately 2.45 billion yen) was fraudulently transferred from Otani’s account to Domoto’s side in order to pay off illegal gambling debts.

It was also revealed that Mizuhara used Otani’s account to purchase baseball cards, according to multiple US media reports.

The US site Front Office Sports reported that based on the complaint, “He used the money stolen from Ohtani to send hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of baseball cards and memorabilia to baseball stadiums for the purpose of resale.”

The suspect purchased approximately 1,000 baseball cards, totaling $325,000 (approximately 48.8 million yen), online. He allegedly used the pseudonym “Jay Min” and sent him to the Dodgers’ clubhouse.

Rare baseball cards are sold for high prices in the United States, and there is a possibility that Mizuhara was purchasing them for resale to pay off a debt.
