Former Schalke Star Benjamin Goller Returns with Mixed Emotions

It will be particularly emotional for him on Saturday (8.30 p.m.) at Schalke.

Club attacker Benjamin Goller (25) returns to the beginning of his career. He made his professional debut in the arena in December 2018. And even in the Champions League. In the group stage he was on the pitch for 59 minutes in the 1-0 win over Lokomotiv Moscow. Goller: “It was of course indescribable to be able to play in the Champions League in my first professional appearance.”

It was no more for him in the royal blue jersey. Nevertheless, he has of course been following the path of his former club closely since then: “It’s really hurting at the moment. Back in the year I played in the Champions League, Schalke came runner-up. And now they are at the back of the second division.”

But there is no room for sentimentality in the next 90 minutes. Goller knows that he may be pushing his former club further towards the third division. To do this, however, he would finally have to take advantage of one of his many chances. The lightning-fast attacker hasn’t scored since the 2-2 draw in Braunschweig in September.

Goller: “That hurts you too. I often find myself in these situations. But I’m just lacking in luck when I think about hitting the post in Fürth, for example. I think that when I have a feeling of success again, I don’t think about it in other situations.”

Good for Goller and the club: Royal Blue currently seems to be sinking into chaos. During the week, former Fürth player Dominik Drexler (33) was suspended because of throwing a chocolate shake in the locker room. Schalke coach Karel Geraerts (42) is also a big player. Due to the unrest there, the chances of an FCN success (without a win at Schalke since 1993) are perhaps better than they have been for a long time.
