Former Indonesian Badminton Player Ricky Soebagdja optimistic about Indonesia’s Young Players’ Potential for 2024 Thomas-Uber Cup

JAKARTA – Former Indonesian badminton player Ricky Soebagdja is optimistic about the potential of Indonesia’s young players. PP PBSI’s team manager and head of development and performance hopes that the players making their debut in the 2024 Thomas-Uber Cup will gain valuable experience.

This follows the performance of a number of debut players in the team event held in Chengdu, China. Among them were men’s singles Alwi Farhan and women’s doubles Meilysa Trias Puspitasari/Rachel Alllessya Rose, who performed well in their first group match on Saturday (April 27).

Meanwhile, Alwi himself became the third men’s singles player to win the men’s singles by defeating British representative Cholan Kayan 21-15, 21-12. According to Ricky, Alwi showed quite good mentality in his first Thomas Cup match.

“I think Alwi played pretty well yesterday. “I saw his ability to overcome nervousness and nervousness on the field in team competitions like this,” Ricky said, as quoted by ANTARA.

“He is dominating the game very comfortably, even though he still has a lot of weaknesses to evaluate. However, it is surprising that he took advantage of the opportunity given to him at such a young age. He added: “This is a good first step towards increasing confidence in the future.”

In addition to Alwi, Ricky also highlighted Meilysa/Rachel’s performance when they defeated world ranked #45 Hong Kong pair Lui Lok Lok/Ng Wing Yung.

Rachel (born 2004) and Trias (born 2004), currently ranked 34th in the world, won the rubber game 21-16, 20-22, 21-18 and contributed to Uber Indonesia’s 4-point lead. The team won 5-0.

“They gave everything they had to win the game. It is not easy for young players to participate in such a team event, but they overcame the pressure well. Ricky explained, “Even though there are still indications that the coaching team needs to evaluate it immediately.”

The Uber Indonesia team is usually full of young players. PBSI also recruited Komang Ayu Cahya Dewi (born 2002), Ester Nurumi Tri Wardoyo (born 2004) and Ruzana (born 2005) to work with senior players such as Gregoria Mariska Tunjung and Apriyani Rahayu.

“PBSI always offers spots for Thomas and other young, talented players with the potential to fill the Uber team. “The goal is to give them flying time and experience that will prepare them for the future,” Ricky said.
