Former football star OJ Simpson has died. This was announced by the American’s family. Simpson was 76 years old. He became known worldwide through a sensational murder trial.
Ex-football star OJ Simpson, who was acquitted of murder charges in a globally sensational trial three decades ago, has died. The former NFL running back died of cancer at the age of 76, his family announced Thursday.
“On April 10, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. “During this time of transition, his family asks that their wishes for privacy and grace be respected,” the family wrote on Simpson’s X account. Simpson’s lawyer also confirmed his death to TMZ on Thursday.
Simpson was arrested in 1994 at the end of a live-television police chase after the bloodied bodies of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman were found in Los Angeles. In 1995, Simpson was acquitted of the charge of stabbing his ex-wife and Goldman to death in the circumstantial trial, which was accompanied by a gigantic media storm.

In a later civil case, Simpson was held responsible for her death and was sentenced to pay compensation of $33.5 million (€31.3 million in today’s money). Simpson also ended up in prison for an armed robbery of sports souvenir dealers in Las Vegas. In 2017 he was released early after nine years in prison.
Simpson dominated the NFL
The former professional athlete grew up in extreme poverty and was in poor health early in his life – but the tide turned for him. Simpson developed into a top athlete and quickly rose to fame, first as a college football player and then in the professional American football league NFL.

Even after his NFL career, Simpson’s popularity continued to grow. He became an actor and appeared in the slapstick comedy “The Naked Gun,” and he also advertised a variety of products from orange juice to rental cars.
“It’s not a great loss to the world,” the victim’s father Ron Goldman told NBC about Simpson’s death. “It’s another reminder that Ron is no longer there.” The public’s fascination never quite faded. A nearly eight-hour documentary called “OJ Simpson: An American Saga” (“OJ: Made in America”) won the Oscar for best documentary in 2017.
