Football: victim of racism in Spain, goalkeeper Cheikh Sarr suspended for two matches

Even though he received widespread public support, Cheikh Sarr was punished by the Spanish Football Federation. This Wednesday, the goalkeeper of Rayo Majadahonda, in the third division, received a two-match suspension, according to the media Cadena Ser.

Last weekend, he grabbed a supporter in the stand behind his goal. He uttered racist insults.

Rayo Majadahonda then lost 2 to 1 against Sestao River. As a token of support, the partners of Cheikh Sarr, sanctioned with a red card after his gesture, left the field. The game therefore ended in the 87th minute. The Spanish Federation therefore decided to give victory on the green carpet to Sestao River, a 3-0 defeat for Rayo Majadahonda.

But Sestao River also received a sanction due to the attitude of its supporters and their racist remarks. The Spanish club must pay a fine of 6,001 euros and will play its next two home matches behind closed doors.

This Wednesday morning, the daily Marca displayed its support for Cheikh Sarr on its front page: “If we really want to put an end to racism, Cheikh must not be sanctioned. The victim cannot be punished. »

Real Madrid winger Vinicius Junior, regularly the victim of insults, also spoke out after the incident: “The racists must be unmasked and the matches cannot continue with them in the stands. We will only have victory when the racists leave the stadiums and go straight to prison. This is the place they deserve.”
