Football: Brest deprived of part of its stadium in the event of a European Cup

Solid third in Ligue 1 with four days remaining, despite its defeat against Monaco on Sunday (0-2), Stade Brestois is close to historic qualification for the European Cup. While waiting to be definitively decided on its European fate, the Finistère club should be deprived of part of its public: according to information from The teamit did not obtain an exemption from UEFA to play its continental matches in its Francis-Le Blé stadium, classified category 2 out of 4. Information confirmed by UEFA to AFP.

The visit of emissaries from the European body has changed nothing and only one forum in four is approved, according to the daily. The other three, all tubular stands (made of metal tubes), are therefore not suitable for hosting European matches in Brest.

The SB29, notified of this decision at the end of last season, therefore has the choice between a reduced capacity at Francis Le Blé (5,000 spectators maximum) or a relocation to a stadium that meets standards.

Nantes or Rennes as fallback solutions?

Nantes (300 km) or Rennes (245 km) are options, even if the Le Saint brothers, at the head of the club, were not considering migrating until recently. Will this UEFA decision force them to do so? Above all, Stade Brestois must clarify its European future.

The third in Ligue 1 is one point ahead of Lille (4th, qualified for the Champions League play-off) and six over Nice (5th, in the Europa League), both with one game in hand. The sixth and qualified for the Europa Conference League, Lens, is seven lengths behind. With only four games remaining (Rennes, Nantes, Reims and Toulouse), the Breton club is close to the goal.
