Fluminense won the first Rio classic in the Brasileirão. In a game valid for the third round, Team de Guerreiros defeated Vasco, this Saturday (20/04), by 2-1, achieving their first victory in the competition at Maracanã. Paulo Henrique Ganso and Martinelli scored for Tricolor, who has four points and, at this moment, jumps to eighth place on the leaderboard.

The team led by coach Fernando Diniz returns to the field this Thursday (25/04), when they face Cerro Porteño-PAR, at 7pm, at the Nueva Olla Stadium, in the third round of CONMEBOL Libertadores.

FIRST TIME

The classic started off balanced, with Fluminense putting pressure on Vasco’s ball and betting on crosses towards the area. This is how the first zero on the scoreboard fell. In the 9th minute, Marcelo crossed just enough for Paulo Henrique Ganso to appear between the defenders and, with his head, hit the goalkeeper’s left corner. The number 10 needed to climb higher than the defense to find the net.

In the 16th minute, Marquinhos advanced to the baseline on the right and passed it to Germán Cano, at the second post, to finish first, sending it over the top. Shortly afterwards, Jhon Arias took a free kick straight towards the goal, but missed the target. Marcelo’s long shot, at 41, ended up in the archer’s hands.

SECOND TIME

With control of the actions and dominance of ball possession, Fluminense returned to the field seeking to involve Vasco with their exchange of passes. The initiative had an effect in the first minute, when Marquinhos played the ball with Samuel Xavier and sent a cross to save the goalkeeper. Germán Cano tried to score, but the archer kept it.

In a counterattack led by himself, Martinelli, at 7, expanded, after receiving a cross from Samuel Xavier, controlling the chest and pushing it into the back of the net. The rival decreased moments later. The immediate response came with Jhon Arias’ shot, intercepted by the goalkeeper.

The classic gained excitement, but Tricolor still knew how to create danger, such as a shot from Marcelo, which exploded at the defense, and a free kick from Marquinhos, which hit the crossbar. At 40, the attacker fired towards the area, but sent it into the goalkeeper’s hands. In the end, Flu still advanced with Jhon Arias, face to face, and Douglas Costas, taking risks from long distance. The submissions, however, ended up being palmed by the archer.
