Flag Judging Reinstated at the Empress Cup All-Japan Women’s Championship

◇21st ◇Yokohama Budokan ◇Weight free

“Flag judgment” has been reinstated at the All Japan Women’s Championship. In January, the All Japan Judo Federation announced that, along with the men’s All Japan Championship, the rules would be changed to no overtime.

The first and second matches of the first round ended in a sudden decision. Four of the 16 games in the second round were flag decisions, and three of the eight games in the third round were flag decisions. Eight of the matches were 3-0, but the only match that was 2-1, between Yuki Tanaka (21 = Kinki University) and Rinoko Wada (25 = Park 24), caused a roar from the audience at the decision.

In recent years, it has mostly followed the rules of the International Judo Federation (IJF). Flag judging was abolished in 2017, and if a winner was not determined within four minutes of the match, the game would go into overtime using a golden score system. If a decision cannot be reached within 5 minutes of this tournament, it will be decided immediately.

This tournament used to be the final selection for the heaviest weight class representatives for the Olympics and world championships, but there is a tendency for powerful athletes to avoid it in favor of international competitions. The rules were changed with the aim of increasing the value of this tournament, which is a rare competition in the world where people compete in open weight classes.[Daiki Iioka]
