A very particular Turkish Super Cup final, which recalled what happened in Italy in the 1960-’61 season when, in protest against the federation for a decision by Caf, Inter decided to field the Primavera team against Juventus, who won 9 -1 with 6 goals from Omar Sivori, on the day of Sandro Mazzola’s Nerazzurri debut and the last match of Giampiero Boniperti’s career.
In Istanbul it didn’t go exactly like that, because the derby final between Galatasaray and Fenerbahce lasted a couple of minutes. Then the ‘Fener’, who had sent their Under 19 team onto the field, withdrew their players from the field, at 1-0 for the ‘Gala’ who had already scored in the first minute of the game, with Mauro Icardi . All this was the result of an announced protest by the yellow-blues against the federation and a football system by which they feel damaged, also given the mild sanctions for the pitch invasion and the aggression last 17 March, when Trabzonspor fans began a manhunt for Fenerbahce players.
Thus the Istanbul club had asked for the postponement of the Super Cup final against Galatasaray, to allow Dzeko and his teammates (the only Turkish team remaining in Europe) to better prepare for the Conference League quarter-final match against Olympiacos, and to what extent it was conducted by a foreign referee. But the requests were rejected by the federation and therefore the protest began.
Now Fenerbahce has made matters worse with a venomous note aimed at the country’s football authorities. “The club did this – we read in the statement released to explain the boycott – for the principles and values in which it believes and because it has reached the point of rebelling against the injustices suffered, against the use of double standards, against those who steals from our work. This is only the first concrete step. We will continue to resist today and in the future as we did yesterday. Turkish football needs to be reset now, it must be rebuilt. In Turkey we have the qualified personnel to do this. I hope that the our rebellion and our actions trigger the cleansing process that must be undertaken.”
