FC Bayern’s Coaching Conundrum: Time Running Out as Differences Emerge in Management Circle

Time is slowly running out when it comes to FC Bayern’s coaching question. The problem: There are differences in the management circle.

Will he return to Bayern or not? Julian Nagelsmann. IMAGO/Kirchner Media

Kicker reported almost three weeks ago that Max Eberl sees current national coach Julian Nagelsmann as the top candidate. Meanwhile, FC Bayern’s sports director is said to have intensified its efforts to recruit Thomas Tuchel’s predecessor. Sports director Christoph Freund can also imagine a return campaign for the 36-year-old. Knowing full well that neither of them experienced Nagelsmann as Bayern coach and may not know in detail some of the reasons for the exit – there were numerous, regardless of the ten points lost to Dortmund in the meantime.

Eberl, however, seems convinced of his plan, although according to kicker information there is a strong and not to be underestimated opposition at the top of the club. Especially since the sports board and the sports director can propose their candidates to the supervisory board, but they certainly cannot decide on the new coach on their own. That’s why, even if Nagelsmann is Eberl’s current ideal solution, a turnaround in the coaching search cannot be ruled out.

De Zerbi is no longer an issue – one-year coach option?

Ralf Rangnick (65) is still one of the options, but he is probably not happy that those responsible for the sport would prefer Nagelsmann over him. Roberto de Zerbi (44) is no longer an issue; Otherwise, the names Unai Emery (52) and Hansi Flick (59), who can definitely imagine returning, are still floating around the office.

Also not completely ruled out, although not desirable, is an interim solution – with an option. That means: a coach for one year, so that he can potentially work for Xabi Alonso, Sebastian Hoeneß or Jürgen Klopp in 2025. And if this one-year coach is successful, it would be no problem to continue with him.
