FC Bayern Munich is looking for reinforcements. Now a name that has been traded for months is resurfacing.

Munich – These are the weeks of upheaval at FC Bayern Munich. Once again. Because Konstanz has been a foreign word on Säbener Straße in the recent past. At least when it comes to certain positions.

FC Bayern is in upheaval again: a lack of a coach makes player transfers more difficult

It was just a year ago when CEO Oliver Kahn and sports director Hasan Salihamidzic proudly presented a new coach named Thomas Tuchel. The two bosses left their positions just two months later, and Tuchel’s end was finally sealed after eleven months – he will be retiring on June 30th. At the executive level, others have long been in charge: Jan-Christian Dreesen is the new CEO, Max Eberl has been the new sports director since March 1, 2024. And the new coach?

It hasn’t been found yet. The fact is: Xabi Alonso will stay in Leverkusen, so the Basque is no longer an option for the record champions. He made that clear on Good Friday. For many players, regardless of whether they are currently under contract in Munich or are still to be lured to the Isar, the question of who is primarily responsible for the sport is of course essential. Certainly also for Martin Zubimendi.

Martin Zubimendi remains in the focus of FC Bayern Munich: He should be able to imagine a change

The midfielder from Real Sociedad San Sebastian has been considered a potential Bayern newcomer for months, and Munich is said to be very interested in the 25-year-old. He would be the classic “Holding Six” that Tuchel had wanted at FCB for so long. And the good news from the German record champions’ point of view: The five-time Spanish international should actually be able to imagine a change.

Like the Spanish portal The National Reportedly, Zubimendi is said to be attracted by the opportunity to play for national and international titles every season. Of course, there is always a chance of silverware at FC Bayern, but this season only the Champions League is remotely realistic. For example, the German championship has moved exclusively to Munich for the last eleven years. With the supposed guarantee of the title, the Reds were also able to lure Harry Kane – but his eternal curse seems to continue for now.

“Busquets 2.0” before Bayern move? Transfer fee would already be fixed

So far in his career, Zubimendi has a cup win with San Sebastian (2020) and a UEFA Nations League triumph with Spain (2023) on his business card. So there would still be room. Positive from Bayern’s perspective: Like every other player from the Spanish La Liga, Zubimendi also has a legally binding release clause in his contract. This should be 60 million euros – so the transfer fee between the clubs would no longer be negotiated, but would already be fixed. The market value of “Busquets 2.0”, as he was already known in Spain, is 50 million euros (transfermarkt.de).

This is where the coaching question comes into play: The Bayern bosses obviously need their new strong man on the sidelines before they can buy a 60 million euro package. Because if the new coach didn’t plan with Zubimendi at all, a lot of money would have been burned – a scenario that has already happened several times in the football world. Zubimendi’s compatriot might also feel much more comfortable if he moved to Munich. (mind)
