Bayern are fighting in the semi-finals against Real Madrid for their last chance of the season
In the semi-final first leg of the Champions League, Bayern Munich is fighting against Real Madrid for the last chance to win the title. However, Bayern are still worried about several ailing players such as Konrad Laimer and Jamal Musiala. Coach Tuchel is self-confident: “My approach is to set up a final.”
The Bundesliga has a fifth starting place in sight for the new Champions League season. Dortmund in particular would benefit from this. That’s extra motivation in the duel with Paris. BVB could even ensure a sixth Bundesliga participant in the premier class.
Borussia Dortmund can become the decisive factor on the way to Germany’s fifth starting place in the Champions League and at the same time secure their ticket to the premier class. If BVB achieves at least one win and one draw in the semi-finals (May 1st and 7th) against Paris Saint-Germain, Germany can no longer take second place in the UEFA rankings for the current season.
England and France came away empty-handed; with the exception of one special case, the additional place in the Champions League, which was expanded to 36 clubs, would go to the fifth place in the Bundesliga – currently Dortmund.

Italy, which currently has three teams in the semi-finals of the Europa or Conference League, has already secured the bonus place as first in the rankings. Germany still needs three points against third-placed England, which only has Aston Villa in the race in the Conference League. Compared to fourth-placed France, it would be four points if PSG and Olympique Marseille in the Europa League won all their games.
Dortmund can prevent that. FC Bayern can also collect points in the Champions League semi-finals against Real Madrid (April 30 and May 8) and Bayer Leverkusen in the semi-finals of the Europa League against AS Roma.
At best, six German starters
There are two points for a win and one for a draw and one for advancing. Points earned are divided by the number of teams a country fielded in all three European Cup competitions at the start of the season, seven in the case of Germany.

In the best case scenario, six German clubs could even be represented in the premier class next season. That would be the case if the Bundesliga ended up ahead of England in the rankings, BVB won the Champions League and finished a maximum of fifth in the championship. As defending champions, Dortmund would have a guaranteed right to start in the highest European competition in 2024/25, and the additional place above the ranking would go to the sixth-placed Bundesliga team.
