One of Las Vegas’ oldest casinos has closed its doors for good after 67 years. The Tropicana hotel and casino on the world-famous Strip must make way for a baseball stadium and is therefore being demolished.

The Tropicana had almost 1,500 rooms and was located on the Strip next to the MGM Grand and Excalibur casino hotels. Yesterday the last guests checked out in the American gambling city. Shortly after noon, there was a meeting with staff at the main entrance and the doors were closed for the last time. Security guards then closed the complex.

One of the last guests was a man from New Jersey, who had flown thousands of miles to sleep at the Tropicana one last time. With his booking of 600 dollars he could also make a wish come true: lie on a gaming table in the casino. “Because when else can I do that?”, the AP news agency noted.

The Tropicana was also featured in the James Bond film Diamonds are Forever with Sean Connery from 1971. Agent 007 moves between slot machines and takes it in one of the suites. “I heard it’s a good place to be at Hotel Tropicana,” he says in the film.

A baseball stadium will be built on the site of the hotel, close to Las Vegas airport. Its construction fits in with Las Vegas’ ambitions to host major sporting events. In recent years, the gambling city has already attracted an ice hockey club and Formula 1 races have been held there. The stadium should be ready in 2028.
