Exploring Adapted Judo: Promoting Inclusion and Well-being through Sports

Rome, 10 April 2024 – It took place at the Olympic Stadium Beyond limits: exploring adapted judothe first technical-scientific conference on adapted judo, organized by FIJLKAM in collaboration with the European Judo Union and the University of Rome ‘Foro Italico’.

Intellectual-relational disability is a widespread condition and scientific research has shown that participation in sporting activities and judo programs entails social, salutogenic and well-being benefits. The objective of the conference was to compare the scientific results of the research activities together with the practical experiences of judo technicians to outline some best practices that can promote sporting accessibility and social inclusion of people with intellectual-relational disabilities.

The event took place over two days: on Monday 8th there was the technical-scientific conference aimed at FIJLKAM (and FIJLKAM/FISDIR) Technical Teachers, also broadcast in streaming on the federal website and on the EJU platform. After the institutional greetings, many experts on the topic spoke, contributing their studies and experiences. Among others, Emanuela PierantozziOlympic silver in Atlanta 1996 and bronze in Sydney 2004, recounted the successful experiences of adapted judo: “Exercise is like medicine. It is important for the population in general and therefore also for categories with intellectual difficulties. There are many studies that collect positive data on the practice of judo in the population. But it should be underlined how incredibly useful the practice of martial arts is also for people with these disabilities, especially at a developmental age.”

Speakers during the day included: Calvani Menotti, Paola Sbriccoli, Lorenzo Cioni, Anna Magnanini, Emanuela Pierantozzi, Josè Morales, Nicole Maussier, Maria Rosa Muroni, Marina Draskovic and Kerry Transey.

Tuesday 9th was the turn of demonstrations and practical activities. We started with the project Catautismcreated and managed by Nicole Maussier and winner of the “Inclusion 3.0” award established by the chair of Pedagogy and Special Teaching at the University of Macerata.

“The aim of the project is the inclusion of autistic children in judo and karate activities in schools – said Maussier – It started by involving children between 6 and 11 years old in school classes with the presence of autistic children. Professors and psychologists were included in this project. It was all organized through collaboration between technical teachers and psychologists, in a scientific way.”

We then continued with the program Simone’s Adventure, which aims to spread the culture of inclusion and tells the story of Simone, the first judo teacher with Down syndrome recognized by CONI. Here are the words of Fabio La Malfaproject Manager: “They were two wonderful days. We heard the scientific part first and then we teachers tried to translate everything that science gives us as data into teaching. The best part was the 360° discussion, both on the part relating to the competitions and the new regulations, and, in general, on the idea of judo as a means for the autonomy of children with disabilities”

Finally, the day ended with a demonstration of a judo competition adapted with the new regulations of the European Judo Union.

Here, finally, are the words of the President Domenico Falcone: “Important day! It was a party with the children who created the Simone’s Adventure program and the Katautism project. We also presented the new classification of athletes with disabilities, no longer through pathologies but through technical skills. An important transition on a cultural level. And precisely as regards the cultural aspects, the conference was very important, with high-quality interventions from the speakers. It will give us the opportunity to convey these documents so that our technicians can have further tools.

Only by broadening the base of teachers who are willing to try their hand at this delicate task can we offer help and support to children and families throughout the territory.”.
