Expanding Accommodation: Changes to the Tempelhof Act

Changes to the THF Act

Today, the House of Representatives applied for a second reading to amend the Tempelhof Act in order to allow refugees to be accommodated there for a longer period of time. Up to 6,000 places are now possible.

An area on Tempelhofer Damm that was previously usable has now been finally abandoned (area B in the old overview plan).

Overview plan OLD

For this purpose, area A will now be roughly doubled to around 78,000 square meters, so that around 144,000 square meters will then be available. The new areas are directly adjacent to the old area A, which has already been fully used.

NEW overview plan

It has now been decided:

Until December 31, 2028, the area east of the apron shown in Appendix 4

1. mobile accommodation to accommodate refugees and asylum seekers,
2. mobile facilities for education, meetings and support as well
3. related fortifications and enclosures

permitted.

After the deadline has expired or in the event of a previous permanent cessation of use in accordance with sentence 1, the systems must be dismantled.

Change to the THF law

In one Committee recommendation has now been added and decided upon in the changes that relate to the sports facilities existing on these new areas.

If areas are required that are occupied by sports or leisure activities at the time of use, these must be designated to the same extent at a suitable location on Tempelhofer Feld and corresponding facilities must be replaced so that there is no temporary restriction on the sports offering.

Amendment to the THF Act resolution recommendation

This particularly applies to the areas for beach volleyball and baseball.

Around 2,700 people currently live in all types of accommodation in or at the former Tempelhof Airport. On the one hand, these are the long-standing so-called Tempohome on Columbiadamm (on the already used area of Tempelhofer Feld), hangars 1-3 and another container accommodation in the P3 parking lot.

In addition to the above-mentioned mobile facilities for education, meetings and care, up to 3,000 additional accommodation places are now planned without any further planning background. Tempelhof would thus be expanded to almost 6,000 places and would thus become the second largest accommodation in Berlin after the other former Tegel airport with 8,000 places in the future.

Further developments

In addition, Tentaja’s sports and leisure activities in Hangar 4 have now been discontinued. The Komische Oper will be staging a performance here again in the summer.

In addition, around 150 places for schooling will be set up in the P2 car park.
