Embarking on a Taekwondo Journey at 20: Navigating Challenges and Embracing Opportunities

hallo community,

I turned 20 two weeks ago and – after moving to Berlin two months ago to study – I would like to finally do taekwondo on a competitive basis, as there are plenty of good offers here. But as a newly minted 20-year-old, the number is already gnawing at me somewhere.

I previously lived in a city where there were no good taekwondo schools/dojos. That’s why I had to settle for Thai boxing, as there were very good schools for this martial art. Ultimately, I also did it on a competitive basis and was supposed to take part in the state championships in North Rhine-Westphalia. I was trained by my coach on a competitive basis for national championships because I have very good footwork. I did it for 2 1/2 years, so I have martial arts experience.

But from the beginning, since I was a child, I wanted to practice taekwondo. There were a few schools that I tried, but they were dubious and not demanding enough for me. So I was basically forced to do Thai boxing.

what do you think? Is it still realistic to start taking up taekwondo competitively at 20? The will, the patience and discipline are there, as is the talent. I was the fastest and most flexible with my kicks, spargat was no problem. But I don’t just want to use it for self-defense but also to take part in competitions.

I don’t want to become an Olympic athlete, but I think regional championships here in Berlin would be nice.

what do you think? Would you say that it will be more difficult with taekwondo because I previously practiced another martial art and I have to adapt to it first? Or would you rather support me and say that age is just a number… 😛

It would be cool if there were actually martial arts practitioners among the respondents who might also do taekwondo. Maybe you can give me some advice then.

I would like to thank you in advance for any helpful answers.

greetings, johncena361
