Édouard Julien Hits First Home Run of the Season, but Minnesota Twins Fall to Cleveland Guardians

Édouard Julien sent his first long ball of the season, but the Minnesota Twins lost 4-2 to the Cleveland Guardians on Thursday.

The Quebecer hit a solo home run to left at the bottom of the fifth inning to reduce the gap to 3-1.

The Guardians opened the scoring by scoring three runs in the fourth inning thanks to productive singles from Jose Ramirez and Tyler Freeman, then a sacrifice fly from designated hitter Will Brennan.

They completed the scoring on a defensive error by the Twins in the sixth, en route to their third straight victory. With three runners on the trails, Carlos Correa failed to control Brayan Rocchio’s hit, allowing Brennan to cross home plate.

Starter Tanner Bibee earned the win by allowing one run on five hits and hitting five players. Emmanuel Clase pocketed his third save of the campaign after a perfect ninth inning.

Steven Kwan had three hits for the Guardians, who spoiled the Twins’ first home game of the year.

Minnesota left eight runners in scoring position.

Deliverance for the Mets, no more undefeated team

The New York Mets came from behind to score their first victory of the season by beating the Detroit Tigers 2-1, who until today were the only team still undefeated in the MLB.

Pete Alonso hit his second homer of the year to tie the game in the ninth inning, then Brett Baty scored the winning run on a slap from Tyrone Taylor.

The Mets had lost their first five games of the season, but Carlos Mendoza finally enjoyed his first victory as manager in the Majors.

However, the Tigers were off to a good start with a game without a combined run or hit within their reach.

In his first start of the campaign, right-hander Matt Manning started the duel and allowed only four walks in five and two-thirds innings while striking out three batters.

Tyler Holton then came on in relief in the sixth inning and Harrison Bader was finally the first to get the ball to safety in left field. The Mets had not had a hit in their previous 13 innings.

Javier Baez produced the Tigers’ only point by slamming to the right to score Colt Keith.

Earlier in this doubleheader, the Tigers won 6-3 after scoring three runs in the 11th inning.

In the defeat, Francisco Alvarez produced two runs.

Tigers right-hander Casey Mize made his first appearance on the mound in nearly two years. The first overall pick in the 2018 draft, he missed the entire 2023 season and the majority of the 2022 season because of Tommy John surgery and another on his back. He allowed three earned runs and five hits in 4 1/3 innings. He struck out 4 batters and his fastball reached 94.8 mph, an increase of 1.4 from his 2022 average.
