What a pity. There felt like more was possible for Dominic Thiem on this round of 16 day in Estoril. In the end, the Frenchman’s more consistent serve and the Austrian’s faulty return game made the difference in this game. Gasquet was able to generate relatively more points with his second serve than the Lichtenwörth native could with his first. But at least there is still an opening success over Maximilian Marterer, which Thiem will have to build on. Austria’s number two will most likely get his next chance for match practice at the 250cc event in Munich the week after next.

Thiem also has to give up his second serve point in a row and Gasquet makes everything clear on his own serve. The Frenchman uses his first match point to advance to the quarter-finals.

Dominic manages a mini-break to take a 2-1 lead, but then has to accept two of them to make it 2-3. Gasquet has all the trump cards at the first break and leads 4:2 from his point of view.

Unfortunately, Dominic Thiem’s service has been the deciding factor in this game so far. While the Austrian made significantly more mistakes and repeatedly threw in double faults, Gasquet didn’t allow a single break ball in the first set. Dominic now has to be more aggressive, otherwise there will be no chance of a possible duel with Roberto Bautista Agut or Pedro Martinez in the quarter-finals.

Although Gasquet took revenge for the first time with a double fault to make it 15, the Frenchman was no longer having fun and took the first set 6:4 after 51 minutes of play.

In the head to head, Thiem is ahead 3:2. The 2020 US Open winner was able to win all of the most recent three duels.
