Spartak Moscow and Guillermo Abascal officially part ways. The Russian top club reports through its own channels that the 34-year-old Spaniard has been relieved from his position as head coach. That seems to clear the way for Pascal Jansen. The club-less coach is one of the top candidates to succeed Abascal.

De Telegraaf wrote earlier this week about Spartak’s interest in Jansen. Even then, Abascal was under high tension, and after the defeat against Sochi – the bottom line – it was definitely the end of the story.

Spartak is seventh, twelve points behind leader Zenit Saint Petersburg. Jansen must therefore try to turn the tide in the Russian capital, transfer market guru Fabrizio Romano also reports.

Quincy Promes and Manfred Ugalde are still under contract in Moscow. Promes is currently stuck in Dubai and will not receive a salary for a while. Former FC Twente striker Ugalde has only scored one goal since transferring last winter. The young Costa Rican has so far played seven games for his new employer.

Jansen has been clubless since his dismissal from AZ at the beginning of this calendar year. In addition to Spartak, the 51-year-old trainer is also associated with Ajax.

In Amsterdam, Jansen would be one of the three top candidates, next to Young Ajax coach Dave Vos and the also clubless Graham Potter. However, the latter has already thanked him for the job.

It is not yet known whether Jansen is open to Russian interest.
