Diplomacy Alonso: “I have always respected Honda, now it dominates” – News

A ‘GP2 Engine’ to avenge

Fernando Alonso he renewed with Aston Martin on a multi-year basis and this means that in 2026 he will still be on the track at the age of 45 and will therefore return to being equipped with a Honda power unit. In the three-year period 2015-2017, Alonso had to suffer bitterly at McLaren because the Japanese engine then making its debut in the turbo-hybrid era was not at all competitive and the Spaniard pushed for McLaren to switch to Renault in terms of engine supply.

11 years later the radio team went down in history “GP2 Engine” – pronounced by Alonso in the 2015 edition of the Suzuka GP in Japan when he was overtaken on the straight by a Toro Rosso – the two-time world champion will be able to try to avenge that difficult moment: I have always respected Honda as a manufacturer – Alonso’s words reported in today’s edition of the Spanish sports newspaper ASIt didn’t work at McLaren, but soon after they solved their problems and now dominate. The basis for 2026 is already excellent and at Sakura they have all the tools to create a competitive 2026 engine. For me it’s a real pleasure to be back working with them, I know how motivated they are and the level of dedication that distinguishes Japanese manufacturers, also considering the races held with Toyota in the WEC.”

Alonso is convinced that he has a great chance in 2026 when F1 will change at a regulatory level both in terms of the cars and the power units, which will no longer have the MGU-H and will have to be powered 100% by biofuels (the furthermore, the electrical component will have a more predominant role than what happens now in the power relationship with the thermal component). “In 2026 we are going into the unknown in terms of regulation – added Alonso – ma if I had to bet on a project I would bet on ours“.
