Daniil Medvedev’s Temper Flares in Monte Carlo Match

Daniil Medvedev was hard to calm down. “Open your eyes, open your damn eyes! He was over!” complained the Russian tennis hothead during his game against compatriot Karen Khachanov at the ATP Masters in Monte Carlo. His tirade was directed at referee Carlos Bernardes, who had seen a ball from Khachanov in the field that had supposedly landed out of bounds when the score was 5:5 in the second set.

“Who takes responsibility for something like this? The referee doesn’t need glasses because he can’t see anyway. He shouldn’t be a referee,” Medvedev demanded angrily in a conversation with the tournament director. The world number four received a point penalty after his outburst; Medvedev had already been warned when he threw his racket away after a double fault. A little later, the Australian Open finalist lost the round of 16 game 3:6, 5:7.

Medvedev, who is known for his outbursts of anger and heated discussions with referees, was already confronted with an alleged referee error in his second round game against Frenchman Gael Monfils, which further angered him. “It’s not my job to direct the games,” said Medvedev: “Who will do something about it afterwards?”

Medvedev angry – Zverev also loses

Alexander Zverev also missed the quarter-finals despite catching up and suffered a setback at the start of the clay court season. The Olympic champion from Hamburg lost to feared opponent Stefanos Tsitsipas on Thursday in his adopted hometown after a disappointing performance at times 5:7, 6:7 and is still waiting for his first individual title this season.

At the same time, Zverev’s already negative record against Tsitsipas worsened. The 26-year-old’s five wins against the two-time Grand Slam finalist are now compared to ten defeats. Zverev’s hope that he would quickly find his best form after changing the surface from hard court to clay has not yet been fulfilled.

Despite catching up, no reward

Zverev, who had won confidently against the Austrian Sebastian Ofner in his first appearance in the Principality, lost control of the game after a concentrated start and four missed breakballs. Tsitsipas then quickly pulled away in the second set against the increasingly frustrated fifth in the world rankings. Zverev fought back impressively again, equalized after being 5-0 down and forced the tiebreak against the Greek – but he finally celebrated after converting the third match point.
