Daniil Medvedev’s outburst at ‘ridiculous’ referees during Monte-Carlo Masters 1000

Daniil Medvedev attacked “ridiculous” referees at the Monte-Carlo Masters 1000

World number four Daniil Medvedev got angry at the “ridiculous” referees during his straight-sets victory over Gaël Monfils on Wednesday at the Masters 1000 in Monte-Carlo.

Already ahead by a set, but serving to tie the second set at 2-2, Daniil Medvedev got angry with referee Mohamed Lahyani after two disputed decisions during a game he ultimately lost while he was leading 30-0.

“You (the officials) are becoming ridiculous,” Medvedev shouted at the referee during the set change, after losing his service game while leading 40-15.

He was also seen hitting the canopy covering his seat as he shouted and swore at Lahyani.

The first contentious moment was a deep return from Gaël Monfils, which was invalidated by the linesman on the baseline. The chair umpire came down to inspect the score and awarded the point to Monfils although Medvedev hit a winning shot on the ball in question.

On the next point, another deep return from Monfils was ruled good this time by the linesman, but Medvedev stopped believing the ball was long and, after another check by Lahyani, the shot was ruled a foul.

Medvedev then starts shouting at the linesman in question.

“Daniil, please don’t yell at him,” Lahyani said. “He (the linesman) can also make a mistake.

Despite leading 40-15 in the match, Medvedev lost his service game and found himself trailing 3-1 in the second set.

The 2021 US Open champion regained his composure later in the set and won five straight games to win his clay court opener 6-2, 6-4. After the match, Medvedev shook Lahyani’s hand but wrote “in or out???” on the lens of a television camera as he left the Rainier III main court.

Medvedev will face his compatriot Karen Khachanov in the third round, while Alexander Zverev or Stefanos Tsitsipas will await him in the round of 16.
