Several cycling stars suffer a bad fall on a descent on the Tour of the Basque Country. Tour winner Jonas Vingegaard remains motionless and is later taken away in an ambulance. The pictures give rise to fears of the worst.
Another serious accident rocks cycling. Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard and the two stars Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic were involved in a dramatic crash on the Tour of the Basque Country. On the fourth stage on Thursday, several riders fell in a right-hand bend around 35 kilometers from the finish in Legutio and slipped into a concrete ditch. The Dane Vingegaard apparently suffered the worst, lying motionless on the ground for a long time and was finally transported to an ambulance on a stretcher after minutes of treatment.
The pictures of Tour champion Vingegaard caused the greatest concern. The Dane rushed into the ditch in the right-hand bend almost without braking. Vingegaard is on the way to the hospital, his Visma team said. There was initially no more detailed information about the severity of the injuries. According to sports director Frans Maassen, Vingegaard is conscious.
Evenepoel was also taken to the hospital. The Belgian time trial world champion initially maneuvered around the ditch cleverly, but then fell on the grass. Giro winner Roglic, who was wearing the yellow jersey, limped on the road after the crash, but was at least able to leave the scene of the accident in the team car of the German Bora-hansgrohe racing team. He gave a thumbs up as he left.

The crash occurred around 35 kilometers from the finish in Legutio in a right-hand bend. Natnael Tesfatsion from Eritrea was the first rider to slip, then around a dozen other riders fell.
