Cubs Pitchers Crushed in 17-0 Loss to Red Sox

Summary

The poor pitchers of the Chicago Cubs experienced a real nightmare Saturday afternoon, in a pulverizing 17-0 loss against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.

Boston, which had won only three of its 11 home games this season, had two six-run innings in the victory.

Ceddanne Rafaela was a threat throughout the game with four hits, three runs scored and seven RBIs. After a sacrifice fly that produced a run in the fourth inning, Rafaela came back with a two-run double in the next inning.

He then hit a two-run long ball in the seventh inning, before capping his game with a one-run double in the eighth inning, the heart of a six-run Sox surge.

Tyer O’Neill homered in his second straight game to bring his total to nine this season in 19 games. O’Neill finished the game with three hits, three runs scored and two RBIs.

Bobby Dalbec had some good moments offensively with two hits and three RBIs.

On the Cubs mound, starter Ben Brown was not spared and he allowed seven hits and three earned runs before being removed after three and two-thirds innings of work.

In relief, Luke Little gave up five earned runs and Colten Brewer allowed three earned runs. First baseman Matt Mervis was used on the mound in the eighth inning and allowed seven hits and six earned runs in two-thirds of an inning.

The Cubs and Red Sox will meet on Sunday for Game 3 of the series.

Elsewhere, the Red Sox acquired first baseman Garrett Cooper early in the evening from the Cubs, in return for financial considerations.

Cooper will add depth to the first base with the absence of Triston Casas. In 12 games this season, Cooper had a .270 batting average and hit a home run and drove in six runs.

Lopez hits his first long ball

Quebecer of Dominican origin Otto Lopez hit the first home run of his career on Saturday, in an 11-4 loss for the Miami Marlins against the Cincinnati Reds.

Lopez entered during the game and finished the game with two hits in as many at-bats and two RBIs.

Author of a single in his first appearance, in the seventh inning, Lopez hit a two-run homer in a losing cause at the bottom of the ninth inning to reduce the gap to 11-4.

With the Reds’ lead down to one run in the fifth inning, Jesse Winker hit a long ball with the bases loaded. This grand slam allowed the Reds to increase their lead to 6-1.

Jacob Young crossed the plate four times in Cincinnati’s victory.

Reds starter Mitchell Parker allowed six hits and just one earned run in four innings pitched. On the mound for the Marlins, Edward Cabrera suffered his first loss this season, after allowing four hits and six runs, five of which were earned.
