Cuba’s Success at Varadero Pan American Judo Open: Fifteen Medals on First Day

Fifteen medals, distributed in four titles, six silver metals and five bronze prizes was Cuba’s harvest on the first day of the Varadero Pan American Judo Open, which has the participation of 122 judokas from nine nations.

Yesterday, the divisions of 48, 52, 57 and 63 kilograms (kg) among girls, and 60, 66 and 73 kg for men, took to the tatami, according to the International Federation website.

Two Cubans became champions: Yunaisy Roque at 48, winner of Leyanis Batista by disqualification, and Aleanny Carbonell (52 kilograms), winner, by ippon, against Puerto Rican Francine Echevarría.

The Peruvian Marian Flores became champion in the 57 kilograms, after defeating the Cuban Dilianne Sandoval by ippon in the final, and in a great surprise Isabelle Harris, from Canada, defeated the Santiago Maylín del Toro in the 63 kg.

In the men’s event, the American David Terao (60 kilograms) beat the Cuban Milko Obregón by ippon in the gold discussion; In the national duel, Orlando Polanco from Havana defeated Maikel OConor in the final of 66, and Magdiel Estrada from Matanzas was more than Marlon Herrera in the 73 kilograms.

Today this contest will continue, with the multi-Olympic and world medalist, Idalis Ortiz, on the tatami, and the official retirement ceremony of the Olympic runner-up Yalennis Castillo.

To continue filling judo with trophies, Sheyla Hernández (+70 kg) was crowned at the Ibsa Judo Grand Prix, in Antalya-2024, in the j2 category for the visually impaired. The multi-world medalist beat Kazakh Zarina Raifova in the final, and confirmed her excellent form, shortly after participating in the Paris-2024 Paralympic Games.
