Cuba Dominates as 44 Judokas Compete in Varadero Pan American Open

Cuba will be in action today with 44 judokas at the beginning of the Varadero Pan American Open, a competition that will feature the participation of 122 representatives – 71 men and 51 women – from nine countries, with a stage at the Meliá Internacional hotel.

After the official registration on Wednesday afternoon, the organizers announced the largest presence of the hosts from Cuba, with 79 athletes, followed by those from the United States (19), Canada (11), Peru (four), Puerto Rico (three), Costa Rica and Haiti (two), and Nicaragua and Poland (one), in that order.

This Thursday the divisions on the tatami will be 48, 52, 57 and 63 kilograms (kg) for women; 60, 66 and 73 kg for men, according to the International Federation site (www.ijf.org) and the WhatsApp group of the Pan American Confederation Information Panel.

The draw determined this Wednesday that he could only debut with a foreign judoka Magdiel Estrada (73 kg), first seed in pool A, in which he was bye and will have to wait for the winner of the fight against the American Steven Boldbaatar and the Cuban Amaury Fonseca.

Estrada, in the qualification zone for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games for the Pan-American quota, could rise to the top of the podium and now get a good amount of points for the world ranking (RM) that defines the Olympic list for the multi-sport event .

The other Cubans involved in the plans for Paris 2024 in action today are Jonathan Charón (60 kg), Orlando Polanco (66 kg), Idelanni Corabonell (52 kg) and Maylín del Toro (63 kg), a quartet that will fight to score points to the RM and the Pan-American relationship.

This Friday at the closing of the tournament, those also committed to Paris, Idalis Ortiz (+78 kg), Lianet Cardona (78 kg), will compete for Cuba, a day that will not have the presence of Iván Silva (90 kg) and Andy Granda (+ 100kg).

Ortiz, Del Toro, Silva and Granda are also in the Olympic qualification zone, so they will seek to improve positions in the RM with the points they distribute from the competition.

The Cadet-Junior Pan American Cup is scheduled to take place on Saturday and Sunday, qualifying for the Asunción 2025 Junior Pan American Games and also counting for the event in the French capital.

Likewise, the second edition of the Ronaldo Veitía in memoriam Cup under 13 and 15 will be held, without a doubt, a true Judo Carnival, as it is also called.
