You certainly don’t offend Cristian Garin if you describe him as “unpleasant” – purely in terms of sport. This is especially true on sand. And especially the one in Munich. It was here that Garin celebrated one of his five titles on the ATP tour in 2019. On the way there, the now 27-year-old also defeated Alexander Zverev five years ago.

Garin also delivered a formidable performance against Zverev on the quarter-final Friday of 2024, in conditions that gave him significantly more pleasure than the German number one. The strong wind had returned – and brought a lot of moisture with it. As in his opening win against Jurij Rodionov, Zverev had resorted to ski underwear, Garin was more weatherproof.

Zveref loses his calm, Garin keeps it

In the middle of the second set, Garin was leading again with a break after winning the first round, Zverev got into a fight with the chair umpire, and even supervisor Roland Herfel got involved. In fact, the match was played under very humid conditions, which is not uncommon in Munich. Garin, currently number 106 in the world, didn’t let this bother him. And also won the second set 6:4.

Taylor Fritz was already following the match between Zverev and Garin in the dry. If any. The American is waiting in the semi-finals tomorrow after a three-set win against Jack Draper.
