Costa Rica’s Olympic hopes: CONCR aims to secure more spots for Paris 2024

The CONCR trusts that in the coming weeks they will be able to confirm more places

Less than 100 days before the start of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and so far Costa Rica only has four places guaranteed for the big event, with the possibility of almost tripling the number of athletes.

The athletes are being closely monitored by the National Olympic Committee (CONCR) where they hope that as the days go by they will be able to achieve the places that are still in dispute either by positioning themselves highly in one of the competitions, by ranking score or invitations.

The disciplines that have a guaranteed field at this point are surfing through Brisa Hennessey, women’s road cycling whose main candidate is Milagro Mena and there are two places for swimming that at this moment indicate that they would be awarded to Alberto Vega and Alondra Ortiz.

Diana Brenes (judo), Gerald Drummond (athletics), Valeria Cárdenas (athletics) and Alberto Vega (swimming), are four of the athletes who are still in the fight for a place in Paris. ESPN

For Tokyo 2020, Costa Rica managed to bring 13 competitors, so it is practically a fact that the delegation for the next Olympic Games will be smaller.

“Our athletes give their best effort to the best of their ability. It is increasingly difficult because other countries invest much more because they see it as an investment and not as an expense,” he said. Alexander Zamorapresident of Costa Rican Olympic Committee

For the head of this institution it is difficult to say that Ticos can go fight for a medal, with the exception of perhaps athletes like Brisa Hennessey or Kenneth Tencio.

“We think that Brisa for reasons of performance because the sport has statistics and is respected, it is not that someone from one day to the next was inspired and won a medal, we hope that Brisa or Kenneth Tencio, it would be irresponsible to say that we are going for medals, but we do not allow to dream,” he added.

The rest of the athletes still fighting to qualify are:

Kenneth Tencio (BMX Freestyle):

The Carthaginian ‘rider’ will look for one of the six tickets that will come from the Shanghai championships from May 16 to 19 and the Budapest championship from June 20 to 23.

Andrea Vargas, Gerald Drummond, Noelia Vargas, Daniela Rojas (athletics):

The Pan American champion has not yet obtained the ticket at the mark of 12:77, however, she is adding the necessary score to be able to enter by ranking.

Similar is the case with Daniela Rojas (400 meters hurdles), Gerald Drummond (400 meters hurdles) and walker Noelia Vargas, who are working to meet the goal in recent weeks.

Diana Brenes (judo):

Diana Brenes is the one who has the lead to obtain the continental place that Costa Rica seeks to achieve, where the highest ranked athlete in the country would qualify, so she competes directly with the brothers Ian, Julián and Sebastián Sancho for that place.

Maxwell Lacy (lucha):

The wrestler will seek one of the 54 Olympic places that will be up for grabs in the 2024 World Qualification Tournament to be held in Istanbul, Turkey.

Valeria Cárdenas (boxing):

Work is being done on the boxer to try to enable her to go to a qualifier in Thailand. Likewise, the CONCR has already requested a wildcard from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) so that she can attend the tournaments.
