Controversy at Arsenal: Referee’s Decision Sparks Anger from FC Bayern

It wasn’t the joy about the 2-2 draw at Arsenal that prevailed, but rather the anger at the referee.

London. Clear penalty or “kids mistake”? It wasn’t the 2-2 draw in the quarter-final first leg of the Champions League that moved FC Bayern, but rather the referee’s reaction. The scene remains controversial, but it doesn’t change anything anymore. Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya plays a goal kick to Gabriel, who is positioned in the six-yard box. The Brazilian picked up the ball in his hand, put it back on the turf and passed it back to Raya, the game continued. The Swedish referee Glenn Nyberg refused to blow the whistle, citing the heard explanation as a “rookie mistake”.

While all Bayern stars said that it could ultimately be decisive, the former top German referee Markus Merk had clear words for action and criticism of Nyberg.

Of course: penalty!

“When you look at the situation and the immediate context of the whistle when it is first played, the meaning and spirit of football speak against a penalty decision. For everyone who talks about wrong decisions or fraud: Who wants to have a penalty against them in this situation?” said Merk, 62, to the German Press Agency DPA. In terms of the rules, however, there is no discussion: there should have been a penalty. Merk saw the “beginner’s mistake” primarily in the referee. Nyberg’s whistle immediately before the goal kick was taken was unnecessary and irritated the Arsenal player.

What was lost in the excitement: on the Bayern side, the late excitement when Sako fell in the penalty area after contact with goalkeeper Neuer was of course not an issue. Some referees would have immediately pointed to the penalty spot. Despite the mistakes, the game ended “Solomonically”. (fin/dpa)

Furthermore: Real Madrid – Manchester City 3:3.
