Controversial Penalty Call Mars Bayern’s Draw Against Arsenal in Champions League Quarter-Final

That would have been victory!

Bayern can actually be satisfied after the 2-2 draw in the quarter-final first leg of the Champions League at Arsenal. But the Munich team was angry after the final whistle because of a scene.

Super striker Harry Kane (30) on Amazon Prime: “We should have gotten a clear penalty when the referee blew his whistle, the goalkeeper passed the ball and Gabriel took it in his hand. That’s the clearest penalty I’ve ever seen.”

What happened? 67th minute: Arsenal keeper Raya waits to take a goal kick. When referee Glenn Nyberg (Sweden) blows his whistle, Raya passes to defender Gabriel, who takes the ball in his hand and takes the goal kick again. The Bayern stars look questioningly at the referee, spread their arms and complain. Musiala even indicates that Gabriel is playing the ball with his hand.

Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel (50) rages: “It’s a crystal clear penalty. He says to our players ‘that’s a kids mistake’, I won’t whistle that in the Champions League quarter-finals’. This is a whole new form of rule interpretation. This is just incredible.”

But Amzon’s referee expert Lutz Wagner (60) sees it differently. Wagner: “This is a very, very strange scene. In this situation, the referee blew a whistle during the execution. In doing so, he unsettled the defenders. That’s why he said ‘if I contribute something to it, then I’ll give him credit for the second version as the actually correct one’. If you analyze this, you can come to a different opinion. I think in terms of football, the way he solved it was the better solution.”

Wagner then explains that according to the rules, referees do not have to whistle for a goal kick.

For Prime expert Matthias Sammer (56) this isn’t a 911 either: “I’m completely with Lutz on this. This is a situation that is debatable in terms of rules. But in the sense of football, where nothing happens and at this level, I don’t give that. I always wear German glasses and always advocate for them, no question about it. But in this situation I’m rather happy that there wasn’t a penalty.”

Overall, Tuchel was disappointed with the referee’s performance: “All the little things all went in one direction. Any physical contact was whistled off. The first foul on Saka was immediately a yellow card. Every physical contact went in one direction. The Arsenal players could complain however they wanted.”

After the final whistle, Bayern in particular complained…
