‘Code 10’ accompanies José Díaz and his family on the day he receives euthanasia

José Díaz asked for help to die after suffering a domestic accident that caused brain necrosis

José’s last wish was to make his case visible to prevent another person from having to suffer for two years to achieve euthanasia.

“I saw how my brother’s happy face was increasing as his pain was decreasing,” explained his sister Sandra in ‘Code 10’

In 2021, José Díaz suffered a domestic accident that left him irreversible consequences. He was diagnosed with methanol encephalopathy, suffered a necrosis cerebral with irreversible consequences that made movement difficult, caused almost total blindness and unbearable and constant pain. For more than two years he has been denied euthanasia, but they finally approved it and ‘Code 10’, at the wish of José and his family, has accompanied him to make his struggle visible.

José decided after many evaluations that he wanted to die with dignity, but he had to fight for almost three years to achieve it. “It is a daily suffering to see a person you love crying in pain,” his sister Sandra told us about him.

He applied for aid-in-dying benefit, but was denied on three occasions, on one occasion asking him to prove that he was Spanish: “I presented it in folio size, we thought it was embarrassing.”

Finally, he got a consulting doctor to sign a report after his case became public. After moving heaven and earth, José finally achieved his goal and his sister did not understand why they have delayed it so much: “I have not understood all that struggle when the law is clear and precise, you must have a chronic condition, an incurable and irreversible disease ”.

José’s family wants to make his fight visible to help others

No one around him understands why such a long wait was necessary and his mother asked: “May your fight not be in vain.” Therefore, at the express wish of his family and José himself, ‘Code 10’ has accompanied them on this last day. His family told us that they had not seen him so happy since everything happened: “Imagine the suffering and agony that person must have,” Sandra told us, telling us that her brother tried to commit suicide, but wanted to die with dignity. : “Calm, without suffering, without pain.”

At his side, José made a gesture with both thumbs up, which his family interpreted as a celebration for having achieved his goal: “When there is true love and it is pure, The only thing you have to do is accept it, He has no quality of life, he is unworthy and we respect him for some words he said at the time, that he felt like a prisoner of his body,” Sandra said.

Barto Pérez, his mother, confessed to us that she felt satisfied because it was what he wanted but as a mother she was “defeated”: “I’m going to lose my son.” Of course, he didn’t want to cry because that’s what he asked him to do: “He wants us to be calm and well because he’s happy and he’s going to stop suffering. You’re very brave son, I love you,” he told him.

Surrounded by his family, José went like every day to have a coffee and then his friends and family went to the hospital where he was going to say goodbye. Very affected, Barto was grateful for the opportunity for her struggle to serve as an example so that other families do not have to face this struggle.

“Are you leaving in peace?” they asked José and he nodded.

On the set, his sister Sandra told us that he had left surrounded by everyone: “I saw how my brother’s happy face was increasing as his pain was decreasing.”

“He died with a big smile, I want to keep that beautiful part, some will think it’s crazy, but it was a very beautiful death because it was without pain, without suffering,” José’s sister said, very emotional. .

The message from Barto, José’s mother

Just a few minutes after saying goodbye to his son, Barto explained that he had left peacefully: “Holding my hand because he didn’t let go because he wanted to be by his mother’s side, as always. “He left very peacefully, his pain is over.”
