Coco Gauff Eyes French Open Title as Clay Court Season Approaches

The world number three spoke as the clay court season approaches. And is already planning on Roland-Garros.

World number three Coco Gauff is full of optimism heading into the clay court season as she targets a maiden French Open title, but the American said her immediate goal is to end her trophy shortage on this surface in the weeks to come.

The last time Gauff won a clay court title was at the Emilia Romagna Open in 2021, a year before losing in the French Open final to Iga Swiatek. The 20-year-old will have the opportunity to end that drought in Stuttgart this week, with tournaments in Madrid and Rome on the horizon before the second Grand Slam of the year. “For the clay court season this year, I am very optimistic”she told reporters ahead of her match against fellow American Sachia Vickery later on Wednesday.

“The objective is obviously to win Roland-Garros, but that is the case for all high-level players. The goal should be to win the big tournaments. But I’m not thinking about Roland-Garros for the moment. I focus on Stuttgart. I want to try to win Madrid, Rome or here… I just want to get a recent title on clay. I want a recent title on clay, so any in the next two weeks would be good..

The US Open champion has added her former coach Jean-Cristophe Faurel to her team, alongside Brad Gilbert, as she looks to win a second Grand Slam crown. Gauff has had some good results on clay with Faurel in his corner, including winning the Roland Garros junior title in 2018.
