Club World Cup: Bayern victory brings Salzburg 50 million euros

Club World Cup

It will be with great joy that Red Bull Salzburg will have noted Arsenal London’s exit from the Champions League quarter-finals at FC Bayern Munich on Wednesday. This means that Austria’s series champions have secured their ticket to the lucrative Club World Cup in the USA in the summer of 2025. Participation is a first for an Austrian club, and it brings the Salzburg team a windfall of money that has never been seen before.

According to media reports, the entry bonus from the World Football Association (FIFA) for the new tournament alone is expected to be in the region of 50 million euros for each team. That would be more than an annual budget for all other clubs in the domestic Bundesliga. If the currently struggling “Bulls” actually miss defending their title in the Bundesliga and subsequently missing out on participating in the CL next season, the resulting financial losses will be more than made up for.

Twelve starting places in the club competition, which has been expanded to 32 teams, go to Europe. The country contingents are limited to two tickets; only Arsenal’s CL title would have given England a third place in the Club World Cup. The game will be played from June 15 to July 13, 2025 in the previously known format of the Men’s World Cup with eight groups of four.

Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester City are the CL winners of the last three years. Bayern, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan, FC Porto, Benfica Lisbon, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus Turin have also secured their tickets via the European Cup standings since 2020. The second Spanish team is Atletico Madrid, which benefited from FC Barcelona’s elimination from the Champions League on Tuesday despite their own defeat against Dortmund. The remaining 20 participants are from other continental associations.
