Claudia Villafañe Reflects on Grandchildren and Memories of Diego Maradona

Claudia Villafañe spoke about her grandchildren and the memory of Diego Maradona

This Monday night Claudia Villafañe was interviewed on A Todo Ritmo (El Nueve) and talked about everything. But the most emotional part of the conversation was when she talked about the bond she has with her three grandchildren: Benjamín Agüero Maradona – son of Gianinna Maradona and Sergio El Kun Agüero – and Roma and Azul Caldarelli Maradona, born from the bond formed by Dalma and Andrés Caldarelli.

“My grandparenthood was changing, the stages were changing. Benja is already 15, I was a theoretically young grandmother. I did many more things than I can do now with the littlest one. I get a little more tired, but I still don’t stop doing them, of course,” Diego Armando Maradona’s ex-wife began by saying. “Roma is the one left in the middle and she is very jealous of Benja. Azul, the youngest, she doesn’t understand much. And Benja does it on purpose, she comes running, hugs me and says: ‘she’s just my grandmother.’ ‘No, she’s not just yours, she’s my grandmother too,’ she tells him and that’s when they start fighting. But the truth is that I am very happy with my three grandchildren,” Villafañe defined.

“The first one marks you a lot, it is like the first child. The first grandchild is a lot. Witnessing Gianni’s birth, along with Sergio of course, who was there, was something wonderful. And grabbing him, having Benja… I enjoyed it and I enjoy it a lot. At first in some things, now in others. Now, for example, going to see him at football, accompanying him in training, games, wherever… I put the GPS on and it tells me an hour and a half, an hour and forty of the trip. And well, I’ll go there until I get there. But I’m happy, of course. Wire and everything. I am a big fan,” Claudia said about how he accompanies Benjamín in his first steps as a soccer player.

Then they asked her if she advises her daughters about motherhood and she says she doesn’t intervene as much. “I tell them, they listen to me somewhat, but I know that afterwards they will have something of what you tell them. Maybe every parent raises their children in the best way. Nobody teaches you how to be a mom or dad. It’s the experience, it’s the day to day. Some things work for some, others another. Nobody knows which is better or worse. One has to try. As long as it is from love, everything is fine, you can make mistakes. But later you are going to fix it,” she said.

In another part of the talk he remembered Diego regarding the bond that the soccer star maintained with his grandchildren. “When I see what Benja is doing in football, that’s when I say: ‘What he’s missing, what Diego missed by not being able to enjoy it.’ Because I know he would be there. When Benja played in a neighborhood club with school friends, he was there. I remember that during Benja’s first game he sent a cameraman to film the entire game. So imagine what it would be like to see him enjoying it so much now,” Claudia recalled.

“I always remember Diego as a family, because you only know what he lived and what was experienced as a family, with your children, your grandchildren. Benja always remembers it. Whatever he sees on a video, he comes and he tells me: ‘Dad, were you there? Do you remember what happened, what didn’t happen?’ Roma saw him a little but it is as if she had seen him for a long time, because she always remembers him and she talks about him as if it were nothing,” she said.

Maradona’s material memories are a source of dispute among the Diez’s eldest grandchildren. This is how Claudia told it with a laugh: “Roma fights with Benja because she tells him that he has to share his grandfather’s things, because she loves them too. And you don’t get anything from Benja. He is very jealous of things. If he has anything from Grandpa that he took from my house, it’s already his. When Roma understands a little more, she will also want things from her grandfather. If Benja authorizes me, I will give him something.”

Finally, he said that the decision not to publicly show Roma and Azul was not Dalma’s decision, but Caldarelli’s. “The father decided it because they are very little and if they go with the other grandparents to the carousel or a square, no one knows who they are. It is to preserve them. Anyway, Roma already wants to have a YouTube channel. She came out to the mother, she loves it,” she revealed. “I leave education to the parents. I miseducate, I am spoiled,” Claudia closed with a laugh.
