City of Thetford Municipal Council Meeting Highlights: Revitalization, Basketball Courts, Asbestos Premium & More

Here is what caught the attention during the municipal council meeting of the City of Thetford which was held on Monday April 15.

REVITALIZATION OF THE BECANCOUR RIVER

The City requested a grant of $50,000 as part of the Regions and Rurality Fund – Support for vitalization and intermunicipal cooperation for its project to appropriate and revitalize the Bécancour River at St-Noël Park. The total cost is $450,000.

“We will take advantage of the construction work on the wastewater retention basin to redevelop the area in order to create something beautiful and offer citizens better access to the river. We would have liked this project to be subsidized at 85% as is the case for the basin, but it did not work. We will do the total. We should not return to St-Noël Park for work for a long time,” said Mayor Marc-Alexandre Brousseau.

Note that the contract for the construction of the retention basin, the costs of which are estimated at around $20 million, will soon be awarded. The work will be carried out this year.

BASKETBALL FIELDS

The City entrusted Groupe M2L with the supply and installation of an acrylic surface for two basketball courts at Notre-Dame Park at a cost of $38,720, plus taxes. This project is part of an approach surrounding the future vision of the various municipal parks. Mayor Brousseau indicated that an important announcement on this subject is planned soon.

ASBESTOS PREMIUM

A bonus of $1 per hour will be paid to employees working with their personal protective equipment when exposed to materials containing asbestos for civil engineering work. This bonus is applicable only for hours worked with said specific equipment and will be applicable retroactively from May 1, 2022.

“This is something common in the private market. We had resisted putting it in place for a bit. […] We’re really not talking about large amounts. This represents a few dozen dollars per year. It’s not major,” said the mayor.

BASEBALL SENIOR THETFORD

The City confirmed and authorized the conclusion of an agreement with Baseball senior Thetford concerning the use of Desjardins stadium for the summer periods 2024 to 2026 and the payment of a total amount of $18,000.

“We always said we would be there,” said Mr. Brousseau. We even increased our support for the first year to make the project work. The City’s support was clear from the start. We never left any doubts. We wanted a team back and we are there in a big way. »

Note that a team will now be dedicated to the maintenance of all of the sports fields, which means that one person will be present during the various baseball matches.
