The Rangers acquire Jimmy Robbins from the Blue Jays.
The Texas team will continue to have Robbins in Triple-A, giving him the opportunity to either start or relieve for multiple innings. The Rangers have also decided to promote Jack Leiter from Round Rock for his first major league game tomorrow. Unfortunately, their relief options for left-handed pitchers were diminished due to Brock Burke’s self-inflicted hand injury during the weekend.
The Rangers have added Jimmy Robbins, a left-handed player in the minor leagues, to their team from the Blue Jays. This was announced by Texas’ main affiliate in Round Rock. As he was not on the Toronto 40-man roster, he will not take up a spot on the Texas team. According to the transaction tracker on MLB.com, the Jays received cash in exchange.
Robbins, who stands at 6 feet and 3 inches and is left-handed, has not yet made it to the major leagues. In 2019, the Jays chose him from a junior college in Florida in the 20th round of the draft. Robbins has never been ranked among the top 30 prospects for the organization by Baseball America. However, in 2023, Eric Longenhagen and Tess Taruskin from FanGraphs mentioned him as an honorable mention in their analysis of the Toronto farm system, praising his slider and labeling him as a potential left-handed specialist in the bullpen.
The individual, aged 26, primarily held the position of a starting pitcher in their career, but their difficulties in maintaining control are likely to lead them towards a role in relief. In Double-A last year, they made 22 appearances, 18 of which were as a starting pitcher, and they walked nearly 14% of the batters they faced. This resulted in a mediocre 4.67 ERA over a total of 86 2/3 innings. On two occasions in the past two years, Robbins has been given the opportunity to participate in big league Spring Training as a non-roster invitee. In four relief appearances, they have allowed two runs in a span of 5 1/3 innings. So far this season, they have been called upon twice to pitch out of the bullpen in Triple-A, where they have thrown for a total of 2 1/3 innings and given up two runs.
