Chance of an Olympic ticket: Badminton European Championships: Fabian Roth reaches quarter-finals

At the European Badminton Championships in Saarbrücken, Fabian Roth was able to win again in the singles. The 28-year-old is getting a little closer to qualifying for the Olympics. Other German participants were also able to celebrate success.

On Monday, Fabian Roth secured the first German victory at the European Badminton Championships in Saarbrücken. Now the 28-year-old has also been able to hold his own in his second match.

In the men’s singles against the Hungarian Gergo Pytel he won easily in two sets (21:11 and 21:8). With his victory, Roth also secured important points for Olympic qualification. In order to start there, he has to reach the quarterfinals.

Before that happens, however, the 28-year-old still has to assert himself in the round of 16. There he will meet Frenchman Alex Lanier on Thursday.

Successes in mixed doubles and women’s singles, Schäfer is ranked first in the world rankings

From a German perspective, further successes could be celebrated on Wednesday. In the mixed doubles, Thuc Phuong Nguyen and Jones Ralfy Jansen won 2-0 against the Scots Julie MacPherson and Adam (21:16, 21:17). They are now in the quarter-finals.

In the women’s singles, Miranda Wilson won against Ireland’s Rachael Darragh in straight sets 24:22 and 23:21. Wilson will now face Neslihan Arin from Turkey in the round of 16.

In the men’s singles, Kai Schäfer was defeated by Viktor Axelsen. The world number one from Denmark defeated the German 2-0 (21:12, 21:12). Axelsen is considered the favorite for the title in Saarbrücken.

The Badminton European Championships also ended for Matthias Kicklitz on Wednesday. The 22-year-old lost to Dutchman Mark Caljouw (12:21, 17:21).

Lohau and Efler in the round of 16 on Thursday

In the women’s doubles, the BC Bischmisheim players Isabel Lohau and Linda Efler are in the round of 16. They meet the Austrians Serena Au Yeong and Katharina Hochmeir.

In addition, the German men’s doubles Bjarne Geiss and Jan Colin Völker and the women’s doubles Julia Meyer and Leona Michalski are playing for a place in the quarter-finals.

A medal is already at stake for Jones Jansen and Thuc Phuong Nguyen. According to the German Badminton Association, whoever reaches the semi-finals is guaranteed a medal.
