Borussia Dortmund is back among the European football elite. In the win against Atlético Madrid, BVB showed impressive comeback qualities – and are in the semi-finals of the Champions League. The press reviews.

Borussia Dortmund has reached the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time since 2013. Coach Edin Terzic’s team won against Atlético Madrid 4:2 (2:0) on Tuesday, making up for the 1:2 defeat in the quarter-final first leg. Julian Brandt (34th), Ian Maatsen (39th), Niclas Füllkrug (71st) and Marcel Sabitzer (74th) scored Dortmund’s victory. Atlético had meanwhile equalized with an own goal from Mats Hummels (49th) and Angel Correa (64th).

The last time they reached the semi-finals eleven years ago, BVB even made it to the final, but lost to FC Bayern in the German final. This scenario is still possible this time, the Munich team will face Arsenal FC in their quarter-final second leg on Wednesday.

“Borussia Dortmund is now one of the four best teams in Europe”

This is how the German press commented on the game:

“Saarbrücker Zeitung”: “The triumph gives Borussia courage for the tricky final stretch of the season with the upcoming difficult games against the German champions Bayer Leverkusen and their rivals RB Leipzig, who have the same points. Without victories, the danger of having to make do with the Europa League next season increases.”

“Southgerman newspaper”: “It seems magical: Borussia Dortmund is now one of the four best teams in Europe, at least if you take the semi-finals of the Champions League as a benchmark. BVB is currently only fifth in the Bundesliga, but has reached the round of the DFB Cup Missed the top eight and is ranked 13th in the European association Uefa’s multi-year ranking – but that didn’t spoil Dortmund’s fabulous triumph over Atlético Madrid (twelfth in the Uefa ranking) in the slightest.”

“Spiegel”: “The truism is that a Champions League night doesn’t usually provide many such chances. Sabitzer himself was responsible for the fact that she did in the end: assist to make it 2-0, assist to make it 3-2, and the 4: 2 scored with a powerful shot from the edge of the penalty area. It’s one of Dortmund’s truths in this wild season: Anyone who agrees to underestimate BVB will experience their black and yellow miracle.”

“Focus”: “BVB in the Champions League, BVB against Atlético Madrid. It’s the perfect interaction between team and fans. Luckily, a symbiosis. Now PSG can come. For all Borussia, just one step to the final in London. Füllkrug’s announcement: ‘Sure, we want to go to Wembley now too.'”

“tz”: “The Signal Iduna Park has a historic European Cup night. BVB has a crazy exchange of blows with Atlético Madrid and ultimately has the upper hand. Thanks to the 4-2 win, which was well deserved, Borussia Dortmund is back in the league for the first time in eleven years a semi-final of the premier class. After a really strong first half, BVB completely lost the thread in the second half.”

“Leipziger Volkszeitung”: “Now at the latest, the atmosphere in Signal Iduna Park was reminiscent of the big football nights in the premier class – and it won’t be the last one this season.”
