Champions League: Magdeburg loses to Kielce in the Champions League

KS Kielce – SC Magdeburg 27:26 (14:13)

In a closely fought quarter-final first leg, SC Magdeburg ultimately lost to KS Kielce 27:26 (14:13). Despite a good performance, the Champions League defending champions from Germany were behind most of the time and were not effective enough in finishing.

After a restless initial phase, the Polish national champion secured a comfortable lead. After ten minutes, Kielce’s Dylan Nahi hit a Magdeburger in the face shortly after his goal to make it 4-1 – after checking using video evidence, he was shown a red card for this. In what was now a heated game, Magdeburg was unable to take advantage of the advantage in the following two minutes. Only the first timeout when the score was 9:6 (19th minute) brought about a turnaround. The Germans’ throwing effectiveness then improved: they equalized in the 29th minute (13:13), but shortly afterwards Kielce converted it into a narrow lead at halftime (14:13).

Magdeburg started stronger in the second half, but they still failed to take their first lead. Kielce controlled the game and even took the lead again with two goals in the 39th minute (18:16). The Poles created many second chances to shoot through rebounds and prepared well for the Magdeburg offensive. In the 44th minute, Kielce’s Benoît Kounkoud received a two-minute time penalty. Magdeburg took the lead for the first time in the 51st minute (22:23), but Kielce quickly turned it around. Even several timeouts and a treatment break in the final phase did not take away the momentum from the tight game. In the end, Magdeburg couldn’t manage a draw; the score remained at 27:26 after 60 minutes.

The second leg of this game will take place in Magdeburg on May 1st at 8:45 p.m. Later this evening, THW Kiel will play against Montpellier HB in the second quarter-final with German participation. Kick-off is at 8:45 p.m.
