The Bundesliga pushed the English Premier League out of second place in the UEFA rankings for the current season, but it remains close. Behind Italy with 18.428 points, Germany now has 16.786 points. England follows right behind with 16,750.

From the coming 2024/25 season, due to a reform by UEFA, there will be 36 participants in the Champions League instead of the previous 32. Two of the four new places will be awarded to the nations with the best performance in international competitions this season.

There were already five German Champions League participants last season

Three of the seven clubs that started in the Bundesliga are still represented internationally. In the Champions League, FC Bayern drew 2-2 at Arsenal in the quarter-final first leg, while Borussia Dortmund lost 2-1 at Atlético Madrid. Italy still plays internationally with four clubs, England even with five.

A fifth Champions League participant would not be a novelty for Germany; this already happened in the 2022/23 season. At that time, Eintracht Frankfurt had secured participation in the Champions League with the Europa League title.

As things currently stand, BVB, fifth in the Bundesliga, would benefit from the additional Champions League place. This means that eight German clubs would take part in the European competitions next season.
