Celebrating 50 Years of Judo: The Evolution of the Dozulé Judo Club

In 1973, a new section was created within the Secular Association of Dozulé (Calvados). At the time, the only sport offered was football. “There was a real expectation regarding judo”, traces Gérard Biernat.

Under the leadership of three Dozulé residents, Jacques Masson, tax collector and future mayor (1995-2001), Marcel Pioline, postman, and Claude Samson, roofer, and a Cabourg resident, René Bazeille, judo teacher, the first judokas took over the very first tatami. A somewhat rudimentary installation and a movable mat in the family home, currently the party room, will do the trick for a few sporting seasons.

Regardless, the pleasure of discovering and practicing this new activity makes people happy. And highlights great sporting skills among the young people of Dozulé and the surrounding area.

More comfort over the years

A prefab is then installed at the foot of the stands of Henry-Samson stadium. With a fixed training mat this time. We shiver there in winter and suffocate at the first rays of the sun. But that is not the main thing. Judo is becoming a flagship activity in Dozulé. The club is established permanently. The room, initially isolated, is connected to the gymnasium changing rooms. Licensees gain comfort. And the club is big.

It was in 1987 that Gérard Biernat, judo teacher, joined the Dozulé club. “As part of his work, René Bazeille had to do a three-month internship in Japan. He asked me to replace him. » When the latter left Dozulé, it was quite natural that Gérard Biernat succeeded him. “At the time, Marius Regnault was president of the Secular Association of Dozulé and Philippe Valois, president of the club. » Michel Buffet (1965-1989) was then mayor of Dozulé.

70 licensees today

Under the mandate of Jacques Masson, things accelerated with the project to rehabilitate the old annex of the Haras du Pin. The cultural space is born and judo has its place there with a dojo specially dedicated to it. It was during this period that the club was at its peak.

“We reached 140 licensees between 2000 and 2005. Today, we have 70. There was Covid and the difficult return to associations,” continues the former coach. “And the offer has multiplied and diversified in terms of activities on Dozulé”, adds Bernadette Quentin, president, who assures us: ” The adventure goes on “.
